Chic and Simple Sewing, The Cape

This Cape pattern is from the book, Chic and Simple Sewing by Christine Haynes. I made this in just a few hours! I love quick sewing projects with big results! If you are a beginner seamstress or professional seamstress you will love this book . For the beginner, there are no zippers, button holes or tough techniques you have to know before making these beautiful clothes. For the wise seamstress, you can quickly make any of these projects in an afternoon and still have time for the larger “work in progress” projects sitting on the sewing table. I did make one adjustment to this pattern. I lined the wool outer shell with a soft wine colored silk. It is simple. I cut an extra piece of silk the same size as the wool outer shell and pinned them right sides together. Then I stitched around the cape shape. Finally, I cut the armholes, flipped the cape right side out, pressed and topstitch. Follow the rest of the pattern as directed in the book . The best feature of this book

Sew Spoiled iPad Folding Case Question

I received this question today... " Hello! I purchased your iPad cover pattern a few weeks ago and am just sitting down to put it together (so excited!). I was wondering where you have found masonite. Local hardware stores don't seem to carry it. Just curious if you had any tips on where to find it, or a similar product that could be substituted. Thanks!" I thought it might be helpful to make a blog post about what I use and where to find masonite. Sew Spoiled iPad Folding Case - Online Slideshow Maker You should be looking for Mona Lisa Gessoed Masonite .  I like the 9"X 12" size for this pattern. You can find Gessoed masonite panels at Michaels in the canvas painting section.  It looks like this... Artist paint on these panels, so that is why you will see them in the canvas section. If you travel to Home Depot, Lowes or a hardware store you will have to ask for hardboard. It is basically compressed chip board. Also make sure to wear a mask when cutting thi

Timmy Woods Wooden Handbags!

It is no secret that I LOVE bags! I am a bag collector. I have more bags in my closet than shoes, and I am not counting pairs. When I saw this unique Timmy Woods bag  across the room, I had to find out more about it. It is beautiful! The outer shell is made of wood and the Santa face is hand painted. The owner said, “I take it out every year the day after Thanksgiving and use it until Christmas.”  I could see why, it is adorable. She had to replace the handles and the closure over time. The lining is leather and has an elastic side band on either side to keep in it's contents. I loved the sound it made when you closed the wooden shell. This is the bottom. When I looked up Timmy Woods to find out more I was amazed, so many different wooden and unique handbags. Have you hear of Timmy Woods ? Do you own a wooden handbag? Please share, I would love to learn more about Timmy Woods Hand bags !

Lavender Eye Pillow Gifts!

I made these lavender eye pillows for gifts this holiday season. I bought the FLANNEL, Fortune in marine by Anna Maria Horner fabric at Sew Love Fabrics ! They are super fast and easy to make. I found the eye pillow tutorial at Quilting.about.com . After making these soft eye pillow filled with lavender and dried beans. I wanted to wrap it up in a cute way and share how best to use it. I made these eye pillow tags to dress up the gift. If you go to the flickr picture you should be able to download the JPG to your computer and make your own eye pillow tags. Cut the tags out with pinking shears and hole punch both sides of the tag. Then wrap your eye pillows in tissue paper and tie the tag on with red ribbon. Happy Sewing!

Zipper Surgery

Broken zipper! One of my friends at work asked if I could repair a zipper. Honestly, I had no clue what to do?? This zipper was not going to work and after staring at this bag for what seemed hours, I had an idea. First, I ripped out the old zipper! No turning back now! I bought a new 22” zipper and attached the lining to either side of the zipper. Then I placed the outer shell back on top of the new zipper, pin and topstitch. Finally, I cut the excess zipper and tucked the top and side outer shell panels inside the binding. Topstitch the binding and the surgery is complete! Now this bag has a new breathe of life! A second chance! I apologize for the pictures. This was a late night project. Happy Sewing!

Ginger Bread Houses!

Every year my mother brings cookies to bake with the kids! This year she brought a cute ginger bread village! The girls loved getting messy and licking their frosted fingers while decorating their ginger bread village with candies. Mom is so smart! She told me that she decided to make a small village so the girls could have one to eat and the others for decoration. After they finished making the ginger bread village it started to snow! Perfect timing!
