Sew Spoiled's Twist on a T-Dress for Adults!

After making the T-Dresses for my little girls with a pattern from Duck Soup Originals, I began to wonder if the same rules could apply for a Mommy version? I bought a small woman size t-shirt and measured how long the t-shirt length needed to be then added the seam allowance to it (.5"). I took a yard, 44" W X 36" Long, of fabric I had bought and cut it in half width wise now it measured 22"WX 36"L . I am short so 36" long was way too long, I cut the length of the fabric to approximately 22" but you can decide how long you would like your dress to be.
At this time, I have a cut t-shirt and the 2 pieces of flowery fabric measuring 22"X22". My flowery dress fabric was white and see through, so I decided to line my dress as well. I cut out 2 white lining pieces measuring 22"X22" exactly like the flowery dress fabric. I placed the lining piece behind the flowery piece and I treated it as one piece for the remainder of the project.
I wanted to have pockets! I love pockets and with all of the pollen here in the Carolinas I wanted to be able to keep a tissue close by. I remembered in Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross she placed pockets in the Trapeze Dress, page 87!!! I use the pocket template from her book! If you have not bought it yet, you really should!!!
Oh, I just went to her blog and she has a line of adorable Ked shoes out in her fabrics!!!
For kids and Adult kids!!!! EEEK!
Ok Focus!
Back to this project! After sewing in the pockets to the front and back sides of the dress 3.5" from the top of the skirt but before joining the front and back of the dress, I made two ties. The two ties are 4" wide X 36" long, I folded and iron each in half and then folded the raw ends toward the crease in the center. To make a finished end I tucked in the shorter end by a .25" then fold and iron. Place the two ties on either side of the dress .5" from the top. Then pin and join the front and back panels as shown in
Finally, I liked the look of the ruffle at the bottom so I followed Duck Soup's advice in her pattern and continued to follow it as it suggests how to attach the dress skirt to the t-shirt. It worked!!! This works for women sizes 2-8. If you are size 10 and up, use 44" wide X the length of your desired dress for both skirt panels! Everything else lining, pockets and ties would remain the same!
I hope you give this a try! I love the look and feel of this dress. I usually dress so casual and it is nice to have a dress to wear that feels comfortable to be in.
Enjoy!

Cute dress. And you can't even tell it's from a t-shirt.

Sweet Coin Purse Tutorial for Teacher Gifts

This time of year is so special to me because I get to show my gratitude for all of the hard work that goes into teaching my daughters. I love to make handmade gifts and this year is no exception. Since money does not grow on trees around here, I looked at my stash (I keep my scraps in hat boxes ) and tried to see what I had a lot of; small zippers, trims, Peltex strips ( from making iPad cases ), fabric scraps and some hardware for key fobs. So I set to work.  Materials: Plastic multipurpose 5" Zipper  Fabric Scraps Lightweight interfacing 808 Pellon Trims (We clipped  key fobs  with 1.5" swivel hooks onto our coin purses . There are tons of tutorials on making key fobs .) Step 1: Print out the Coin Purse Template  PDF.  Cut 2 main fabric, cut 2 lining and 2 interfacing using the template.  Optional: Cut a 2"X2" square of your choice main fabric or lining. This strip of fabric is used to clip a key fob to your coin purse later. We used a 1.5
